Hi Lovely,
Welcome back to Beyond The Beauty.
Today I want to talk about something I see all the time.
Something I hear in conversations with clients.
Something I've struggled with myself for years.
And something I think many women secretly battle every single day.
Why do we find it so hard to rest?
Not just physically.
Mentally too.
Why does sitting down for an hour sometimes make us feel guilty?
Why do we feel the need to justify taking time for ourselves?
Why do we convince ourselves that everyone else's needs should come before our own?
It's a question I've spent a lot of time thinking about, both through my own experiences and through the countless conversations I've had with women over the years.
And the more I listen, the more I realise that many of us are carrying the same belief:
That rest is something we have to earn.
The Invisible To-Do List
Have you ever noticed that even when you're sitting down, your brain is still working?
You're thinking about what needs doing tomorrow.
The washing that needs putting away.
The messages you haven't replied to.
The appointments you need to book.
The food shopping.
The school forms.
The work deadlines.
The family plans.
The birthday gifts.
The cleaning.
The life admin.
The list goes on.
For many women, rest isn't just about finding time.
It's about finding permission.
Because even when we physically stop, mentally we're often still carrying the weight of everything we're responsible for.
And that invisible mental load can be exhausting...Sometimes more exhausting than the physical tasks themselves.
The Pressure To Keep Going
We live in a world that celebrates productivity.
We're constantly surrounded by messages telling us to achieve more.
Do more.
Work harder.
Stay busy.
Be productive.
Be successful.
Be everything to everyone.
Somewhere along the way, many of us start believing that our worth is connected to how much we accomplish.
That being busy means we're doing well.
That slowing down means we're falling behind.
That resting is somehow unproductive.
I know I've felt that way.
For years, I measured my value by how much I could get done.
How many people I could help.
How much I could juggle.
How much I could carry.
The busier I was, the more valuable I felt.
But eventually I realised something...
Being busy and being healthy are not the same thing.
Being productive and being fulfilled are not the same thing.
And constantly running on empty isn't something to be proud of...It's a warning sign!
The Reality For So Many Mums
I think this becomes even more difficult when you're a mum.
Because motherhood comes with a level of responsibility that's hard to put into words.
You're often the planner.
The organiser.
The comforter.
The reminder.
The problem solver.
The emotional support system.
The one making sure everyone else has what they need.
And when you're constantly caring for others, it's easy to push yourself further and further down the priority list.
You tell yourself you'll rest later.
When the children are older.
When work calms down.
When life feels less busy.
When you've finished the endless list of things that need doing.
But the truth is, there's always something else to do.
The list never truly ends.
And if we wait until everything is done before allowing ourselves to rest, we'll be waiting forever...
Why Rest Feels Uncomfortable
One thing therapy taught me is that rest can actually feel uncomfortable for some people.
Particularly those of us who are used to staying busy.
When we're constantly moving, planning, working, helping, and doing, busyness becomes familiar.
It becomes our normal.
And when we finally stop, we're left alone with our thoughts.
Our emotions.
Our worries.
The things we've been distracting ourselves from.
Sometimes that's why rest feels difficult.
Not because we're lazy.
Not because we're bad at relaxing.
But because slowing down creates space for us to actually hear ourselves... And that can feel uncomfortable when we're not used to it.
Rest Is Not A Reward
One of the biggest lessons I've learned over the years is this:
Rest is not a reward.
It's a necessity!
Yet so many of us treat it like something we have to earn.
I'll rest when I've finished the housework.
I'll rest when I've cleared my emails.
I'll rest when the children are asleep.
I'll rest when I've caught up on everything.
I'll rest when...
But what if rest wasn't something you earned?
What if it was simply something you needed?
The same way you need sleep.
The same way you need food.
The same way you need water.
Because the reality is, we cannot continue giving our energy away without replenishing it.
Eventually, something has to give.
And often, that something is our wellbeing.
You Can't Pour From An Empty Cup
I know it's a phrase we hear all the time.
But that's because it's true.
You cannot pour from an empty cup.
You cannot continue giving your energy, patience, love, care, and support to everyone around you if there's nothing left for yourself.
The version of you that is exhausted, overwhelmed, and burnt out is not benefiting anyone.
Not your family.
Not your friends.
Not your work.
And certainly not you.
Taking care of yourself isn't taking away from others.
It's ensuring you have enough of yourself left to give.
And that's a very different perspective.
What Rest Actually Looks Like
I think one of the biggest misconceptions is that rest always has to look a certain way.
A spa day.
A holiday.
A weekend away.
A massage.
A long bath.
And while those things can absolutely be wonderful, rest can also be much simpler than that.
Sometimes rest is:
Turning your phone off for an hour.
Going for a walk.
Reading a book.
Sitting quietly with a cup of tea.
Having an early night.
Listening to music.
Booking that treatment you've been putting off.
Saying no to something you don't have the capacity for.
Allowing yourself to do nothing without feeling guilty.
Rest doesn't have to be extravagant.
Sometimes it's simply creating moments where your mind and body feel safe enough to slow down.
The Lesson I'm Still Learning
I'll be honest.
This is something I'm still working on.
There are still days when I feel guilty for slowing down.
Days when I feel like I should be doing more.
Days when my to-do list feels louder than my need for rest.
But I'm learning...
Learning that my worth isn't measured by my productivity.
Learning that I don't have to earn rest.
Learning that taking care of myself allows me to show up more fully for the people I love.
And perhaps most importantly, learning that slowing down doesn't mean I'm failing...
It means I'm human!
A Final Thought
If you're reading this and you've been running on empty for a while, I want to gently remind you of something.
You are allowed to rest.
Not because you've earned it.
Not because you've completed every task on your list.
Not because everyone else is taken care of.
But because you are a human being who deserves care too.
Your needs matter.
Your wellbeing matters.
And taking time for yourself doesn't make you selfish.
It makes you sustainable!
Because when we allow ourselves the space to rest, recharge, and reconnect with ourselves, we become better equipped to navigate everything life throws our way.
So if nobody has told you lately, consider this your reminder.
Take the break.
Sit down.
Breathe.
Put the to-do list aside for a moment...The world will keep turning.
And you deserve that moment of peace.
Thank you for joining me for Episode 4 of Beyond The Beauty.
Next time we'll be talking about something that completely changed my life and mental wellbeing:
The power of boundaries and why protecting your energy matters.
Until then, be kind to yourself.
With love,
